IT WAS Friday morning, and we thought we were never going to get away. So many things had conspired against a timely departure.
Is it like this for everyone? No matter when you start getting ready for a trip, it seems that you end up finishing the packing in the early hours of the morning when you leave, and snatching not quite enough sleep before starting out in the morning light.
But eventually we put their bags into the car. Chris and I were off to Port Macquarie, and Alex the dog was going to have a holiday with his Aunty Hannah, so he already had his kennel on the back seat. All three of us put on our seat belts, and off we went.
Because Alex likes to keep close to things that remind him of his family, we made sure he had one or two items with him that had belonged to us.
It was a long drive, made longer by the diversion to drop the dog off. As we travelled, the weather became increasingly grey, and, after a while, turned very rainy.
After a while, the weather fined up. That made driving much more pleasant, though it was well after lunch time when this happened.
I drove about half way, but then started to get sleepy, so Chris drove the rest of the way.
You can see the mountain near Buladelah in the photograph below. The weather was a lot better by this time.
But, of course, the light continued fading. However, it didn't grow fully dark before a sunset with beautiful pastel colours.
In the end, it got dark, and we were still driving. There are many areas where the highway is being repaired or re-aligned, and we had to drive very slowly because it is easy to have accidents when roadworks are underway.
Near Port Macquarie the highway has changed a lot, so we to used our GPS device. However, it kept telling us to use roads that don’t exist any more!
"Please drive to the marked route! Recalculating! Recalculating!" The bland voice kept warning us. What would be next? "Exterminate! Exterminate!"? We kept waiting...
In the end, we found the right roads by ourselves.
You can imagine that, when we finally got into Port Macquarie, we were so glad to get into the little studio unit we were heading for.
